2009 Subaru Forester Overview

Introduction

The Subaru Forester is a crossover vehicle that blends many of the best attributes of a sport-utility vehicle with the ride and driving dynamics of a car. Redesigned for 2009, the Forester enters its third generation on an all-new platform, with a wheelbase that is 3.6 inches longer than the outgoing model and a new double-wishbone rear suspension that enhances cargo capacity.

The Forester is available in four trim levels: 2.5 X, 2.5 X Limited, 2.5 XT and 2.5 XT Limited. All trim levels are equipped with Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a 2.5-liter horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine; in both 'X' variants, the engine is naturally-aspirated and produces 170 horsepower, while both 'XT' variants generate 224 horsepower, compliments of an intercooled turbocharger. The 2.5 X gets a 5-speed manual transmission with Incline Start Assist, while all other trims get a 4-speed automatic with manual shift mode (available on the 2.5 X). Notable (trim-dependent) features include a panoramic glass sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, leather upholstery and heated front seats. In 2009, an optional touch-screen GPS navigation system is offered for the first time on the Forester. Standard safety equipment includes electronic stability and traction control systems, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, active front head restraints, front side-impact airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor.

The Subaru Forester is completely redesigned for 2009, with revised exterior styling, an upgraded interior and additional standard equipment and safety features.

NHTSA Frontal Crash Test

NHTSA rates crash-tested vehicles by assigning them one to five stars, with five stars indicating the most injury protection and one star indicating the least protection.
